Title:Human Adaptive Mechatronics: Skill evaluation, human dynamics identification and skill adaptivity

Summary:
In development of intelligent human adaptive machines, two important problems are human skill evaluation and human operator modeling. In particular, in real-life mobile working machines, the tasks and objectives of the operator vary and cannot typically be measured directly. Moreover, the machines typically lack the measurements of important variables. Despite the lacking measurement capability, skill evaluation and human operator modeling is possible. In this talk the following topics are covered: work modeling and skill evaluation in human operated machines, intelligent coaching of human operators, new approaches in human dynamics identification, and skill adaptive systems.

Biography of Prof. Heikki Koivo:
Heikki Koivo has been a Professor of Control Engineering at Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), which became part of Aalto University in 2010. He received his BSEE degree from Purdue University, Indiana, the MS degree in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Control Sciences from University of Minnesota. Before joining HUT in 1995, he served as Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and as a Professor at Tampere University of Technology, Finland. Dr. Koivo’s research interests include study of complex systems, adaptive and learning control, process control, mechatronics, microsystems and cyber-physical systems. He has authored close to four hundred scientific publications. He has been the principal investigator in more than one hundred research projects including National Research Council of Canada, Academy of Finland, Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES), and EU. He has supervised over 50 PhD thesis. Dr. Koivo is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems, Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing, and Journal of Systems and Control Engineering. He was Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation and a member of the Administrative Council of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. He is a Fellow of the Finnish Academy of Technology.
