Title:R&D and Educational Collaboration Activities between Switzerland and Japan

Abstract:
In the Federal Dispatch on the Promotion of Education, Research and Innovation for 2008-2011, the Swiss Confederation set a new emphasis in its foreign science policy, naming eight non-EU countries with which it wished to broaden and deepen bilateral scientific relations. Japan is among the priority countries. A bilateral agreement on science and technology cooperation between the Federal Council and the Japanese government was signed on July 10, 2007 by former Vice-President Pascal Couchepin and former Foreign Minister Taro Aso. As stipulated in the Agreement, regular Joint Committee meetings, to exchange information and to review cooperative activities, is being alternately held in a two to three year interval. The first meeting took place in February 2009 in Bern. The two sides exchanged views on recent science, technology and innovation policies, activities and achievements, and agreed that the Countries should further promote Bilateral collaboration.
Dr. Felix Moesner, Head, Science & Technology Office Tokyo, Embassy of Switzerland will explain about the collaboration activities between Switzerland and Japan in the fields of R&D and education.

Title:Industrial and Medical Applications of Nanotechnology - Linking mechanics to chemistry and biology

Abstract:
Engineering at the nanometer scale challenges the basics of classical mechanics. This seminar will show several prominent examples how nanotechnology can change classical industrial solutions and leads to unexpected alternatives, often considered as disruptive technologies: Next to viscous metals, nanoporous metal filters for water purification and new unit operations based on nanomagnets, we will discuss clinical applications for the treatment of bone fracture through injectable, bioresorbable cements and light curable bone glue, in dentistry and in vivo toxin removal using selective capture of noxious compounds from inside a living organism through specialized nanomagnets and thereby offers an alternative to the current clinical practice of "drug in - disease out".
The Functional Materials Laboratory (founded 2004) under the supervision of Prof. Stark (1976) explores nanosafety and clinical and industrial applications of nanoparticles. At present, there have been 110 papers, 20 patents and 3 spin-off companies.
