We have been developing operational models for urban air quality that provide real time calculations of pollutant concentrations in individual city streets, and these models are now used by local authorities in a number of European cities (Lyon, Paris, Milan, Turin, Grenoble, Chambery, St. Etienne, and we are currently negotiating a contract for a trial application in London). The general problem contains a lot of fascinating - and sometimes surprising - fluid mechanics.
